Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

The musty smell keeps coming back because the mould is living in the backing, not the surface

It usually starts after a humid spell, a leak under the door, a storm, or a rug stored rolled up too long. You spray it, give it the 50/50 vinegar treatment, maybe leave it in the sun, and for a week or two it seems fine. Then the room goes stale again the moment the rug warms up. In our subtropical climate mould can take hold within 24 to 48 hours, and it does not stop at the pile you can see. The spores settle into the foundation and backing where surface sprays and home remedies simply cannot reach. So it regrows, the smell returns, and many people quietly worry it is the dangerous black kind they have read about, spreading further than they can see.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

The musty smell creeps backsurface or top-only steam cleaning leaves the mould and trapped moisture alive deep in the backing. The damp, stale odour returns the moment the rug warms up, and you are back where you started.
DIY only masks the surfacevinegar, bleach, clove oil and baking soda treat what you can see, but the mould regrows from the foundation within weeks. Worse, harsh chemicals can dull and bleed delicate wool and Persian dyes you cannot get back.
Spores end up in the air you breatheif it is the black mould you have read about, stirring it up at home pushes spores into the air around your kids, asthma sufferers and pets. A wet rug left mouldy keeps shedding them indoors.
Left damp, it just sours againa machine wash or an incomplete dry leaves the rug damp in the core, so it goes sour and musty all over again. Meanwhile the backing weakens and can pass moisture and spores straight into your floor.

“Mould spots were bothering me more each week, especially when the room was closed up. Our natural fibre rug had been against a damp wall and started smelling musty. They checked the rug instead of just masking the smell. We were comfortable putting it back down straight away.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Immersion flushes the mould out at the root

we do not wash the top and hope. Each rug is fully immersion hand-washed at our Yatala facility, so the mould and spores are flushed from inside the backing where sprays and DIY can never reach. That is what actually stops the smell returning.

We dry it properly, so it cannot grow back

the single thing happy customers credit most: we focus on drying as much as cleaning. Your rug is dried right through under controlled conditions and comes back dry and ready to lay down, not with that damp smell rugs can get. No competitor advertises this.

Safe products, treated off-site, never in a van

we use non-toxic, pet and child safe products, and we collect and contain the rug off-site so the spores leave your home instead of spreading through it. Rug-only, IICRC-certified specialists for 29 years, we dye and colourfast test before we wash.

Free pickup plus a free re-wash guarantee

we take the bulky, mouldy rug away so it never sheds through your car or house, something the 24/7 restoration crews do not lead with. Fully insured, and if the mould or musty smell is not gone, our free re-wash guarantee means the job is not finished.

A fresh woven rug after the pet accident in Kearneys Spring
Our dog had one accident on the woven rug, but it was enough to make the whole room smell off. Premier treated it properly and the odour is gone. We are in Kearneys Spring, so having it collected made the job much easier. I liked that the advice was honest before the work started.

Musty smell gone in Jondaryan
Our large area rug had been against a damp wall and started smelling musty. They collected it from Jondaryan and explained the mould cleaning process clearly. A couple of faint marks remain, but the rug feels much healthier.

Puppy smell gone for our Chinese wool rug
The Chinese wool rug had been rolled up after a pet accident because we could not use it in the lounge. The odour is gone so we are happy using it again. It was a sensible result for a rug that gets real use.

Glad we finally booked the clean in Toowong
I booked from Toowong because the shaggy rug was overdue. The shaggy rug came back fresher, softer and ready to use again in the hallway. I would use them again without overthinking it.

Off-site clean helped in Nathan
After a few years in the main room, the Oriental rug needed a proper wash rather than another quick vacuum. The collection made sense because the rug was too bulky for my car. It came back dry, clean and ready to put straight down. That small change made the room feel cleaner overall.

Good help with old stains in St Lucia
The Moroccan rug had reached the point where spot cleaning was not enough. The old stains are much softer now, and the colours look cleaner in daylight. It was an easy result to be happy with. The St Lucia pickup was handled well.

Good to know

Common questions

Can a mouldy rug be saved, or have I left it too long?

Often it can be saved, and the only honest way to know is an inspection. Our IICRC-certified technicians check the backing and foundation and tell you straight whether immersion washing will recover the rug or whether replacement is the smarter spend. We will not condemn a rug that can be saved, and we will not charge for a clean that cannot work. Acting sooner does improve the odds, so it is worth getting it assessed rather than leaving it rolled up.

What kills mould in rugs, and why not just vinegar or a Bunnings spray?

Sprays, vinegar and baking soda only touch surface mould and can mask the smell for a week or two, but they leave the mould and trapped moisture alive in the backing, so it grows back, and harsh ones can dull wool colours. What actually kills it is full immersion washing that flushes the spores from inside the fibres, followed by controlled drying so it cannot return. We will tell you honestly if your rug does not need the full treatment.

Is rug mould dangerous, and what about the black kind?

Active mould releases spores, which matters most for kids, asthma sufferers and anyone sensitive, so it is worth getting out of the house rather than living with it. If it is the black mould you have read about, that is exactly why we collect the rug and treat it off-site at Yatala, so the spores leave your home instead of being stirred up indoors. You will get a straight, no-scare assessment of what you are dealing with, not a fright.

How do I know the musty smell will not just come back?

The smell returns when a rug is washed only on the surface or dried incompletely and left damp in the core. We flush the mould out by full immersion and dry the rug right through under controlled conditions, then check it before delivery, so it comes back dry and ready to lay down, no damp smell. It is backed by our free re-wash guarantee: if the mould or smell is not gone, the job is not finished and we re-do it free.

How does pickup work, and how long will I be without my rug?

Our free door-to-door pickup means we collect the mouldy, often fragile rug from your step, so there is no lifting it into the car and no spores shedding through the house. Standard turnaround is about 7 days, with a 48-hour option on request where a surcharge may apply if you need it back fast for health reasons. We deliver it back fully dry, with pickup and delivery included across South East QLD and Northern NSW.
