Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Why moth damage in Northern NSW rugs is so easy to miss until it is serious

Moths feed out of sight, so the damage is usually found too late. They thrive in the warm, humid coastal conditions across Northern NSW and target the spots you never look: under furniture legs and sofas, along the fringes and skirting edges, and on the underside and foundation of the rug. By the time you see a hole or a worn patch where the jute backing shows through, the larvae have often been eating the fibres from below for months. People try everything first, fly spray, vacuuming, moving all the furniture out, mothballs and permethrin, and still the bald patches keep spreading, because the eggs you cannot see survive in the deep pile.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

DIY exhausts you and still losesFly spray, mothballs, vacuuming and hauling the furniture out feel like progress, but they miss the eggs and larvae buried in the foundation. You spray, you wait, and you are still not sure it worked, while the damage quietly keeps coming back.
The damage is worse than it looksA small visible hole or a bald patch along the skirting usually sits on top of a wider area of broken, thinning fibres that only shows its full size once the rug is properly washed.
It spreads from the rug through the houseLarvae crawl from the rug into wardrobes, carpets and every wool and silk piece you own, so a single untreated rug can quietly chew through your woollen jumpers and the rest of your collection too.
Heirlooms are lost for goodOn an irreplaceable Persian, Oriental or family rug, every week of delay risks permanent loss of a piece you cannot simply buy again.

“The viscose rug had a few marks that looked like moth damage. The rug looks cleaner and we feel better about putting it back down. We kept noticing the wool fibres coming loose whenever we walked past the rug.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Immersion flushes out the source, not just the surface

We fully submerge and hand-wash your rug at our Yatala facility, lifting the eggs, larvae and the dirt that attracts moths out of the foundation and fringes, exactly where a carpet steam, a van spray, mothballs and DIY sprays all stay on top of the pile and miss where moths actually breed.

Honest inspection, no scare tactics

Our IICRC-certified technicians inspect the rug and tell you plainly what they see, what can be saved and what cannot, after 29 years doing only rugs. Older moth-eaten spots may remain, and we say so up front, but the rug comes back fresh, clean and safe to use.

Non-toxic, pet and child safe

Our products are non-toxic and safe for pets and children, so cat owners and parents with little ones crawling on the floor do not have to worry about insecticide residue once the rug comes home fresh and fully dry.

Free pickup, fully insured, guaranteed

We collect and return your rug for free across Northern NSW, even the bulky ones too big for the car, so the infestation is quarantined and treated away from your home. Every job is fully insured and backed by a free re-wash guarantee.

Mould issue handled in Fernvale
The room felt stale because of the damp smell in the jute rug. I liked that they talked about drying as much as cleaning. We were comfortable putting it back down straight away. I was glad we did not have to replace it.

A fresh woven rug after the pet accident in Kearneys Spring
Our dog had one accident on the woven rug, but it was enough to make the whole room smell off. Premier treated it properly and the odour is gone. We are in Kearneys Spring, so having it collected made the job much easier. I liked that the advice was honest before the work started.

Musty smell gone in Jondaryan
Our large area rug had been against a damp wall and started smelling musty. They collected it from Jondaryan and explained the mould cleaning process clearly. A couple of faint marks remain, but the rug feels much healthier.

Puppy smell gone for our Chinese wool rug
The Chinese wool rug had been rolled up after a pet accident because we could not use it in the lounge. The odour is gone so we are happy using it again. It was a sensible result for a rug that gets real use.

Glad we finally booked the clean in Toowong
I booked from Toowong because the shaggy rug was overdue. The shaggy rug came back fresher, softer and ready to use again in the hallway. I would use them again without overthinking it.

Off-site clean helped in Nathan
After a few years in the main room, the Oriental rug needed a proper wash rather than another quick vacuum. The collection made sense because the rug was too bulky for my car. It came back dry, clean and ready to put straight down. That small change made the room feel cleaner overall.

Good help with old stains in St Lucia
The Moroccan rug had reached the point where spot cleaning was not enough. The old stains are much softer now, and the colours look cleaner in daylight. It was an easy result to be happy with. The St Lucia pickup was handled well.

Good to know

Common questions

Can you get rid of moths in a rug, and what actually kills rug moths?

Yes, when you reach the eggs and larvae buried in the pile and foundation, not just the moths you can see. Mothballs, fly spray and surface vacuuming miss the larvae deep in a wool or antique rug, which is why it keeps coming back. We fully submerge and hand-wash the rug at our Yatala facility so the treatment reaches where moths actually breed, then return it fresh and fully dry. To keep them gone, we pair that with prevention advice, because adults or eggs can survive elsewhere in your home.

Do carpet moths ever go away, or is it impossible to get rid of them?

They do go away, but only when you treat the source rather than the symptoms. People exhaust themselves with sprays and still lose, because the eggs survive in the deep pile and elsewhere in the home. Our immersion hand-wash removes the eggs, larvae and the dirt that attracts them, and we return the rug fully dry so there is nothing left for the next generation to feed on. For valuable wool and handmade rugs, a regular professional clean helps keep them gone.

Does vinegar kill carpet moth eggs, or will a normal carpet clean sort it out?

Not reliably. Vinegar and home sprays do not consistently kill eggs and larvae, and a normal carpet clean or steam only treats the top of the pile, missing the eggs and larvae living in the foundation and along the fringes. That is the difference with our process: we never steam over your rug like carpet, we fully immerse and hand-wash it so the treatment reaches the parts where moths breed.

Will the treatment be safe for my pets and my kids?

Yes. We use non-toxic products that are safe for pets and children, which matters especially for cat owners and for parents whose children crawl and play on the rug. Because we wash off-site at Yatala and return the rug fully dry, there is no insecticide residue or damp coming back into your home. You do not have to choose between clearing the moths and keeping a low-tox house.

Is it worth treating, or should I just buy a new rug, and do you really come to Northern NSW?

We give you a straight answer with no scare tactics. At pickup our IICRC-certified technicians inspect the rug and tell you honestly whether cleaning and treatment make sense, especially for a wool, silk, Persian or sentimental piece worth saving. If older holes or bald patches remain after washing, we say so up front, and the rug still comes back fresh and safe to use. Yes, we genuinely service Northern NSW as well as South East QLD, with free pickup and delivery, including rugs too big for the car. Standard turnaround is about 7 days, with a 48-hour option on request for an active infestation. We quote by the size, fibre and condition of your rug, and you save $20 on every additional rug in the same booking.
