Why clothes moths quietly destroy rugs on the Gold Coast
The adult moth you see flitting about is harmless. It is the larvae that eat the wool and silk, and they feed in the dark places you never check, under the couch, beneath furniture legs, on the back and underside of the rug and along the fringes. People tell us the same thing every time: they try everything, vacuuming, fly spray, dragging out all the furniture, and still the pile keeps thinning along the skirting until the jute backing shows through. By the time a bald patch appears, the larvae have often fed for weeks. Then they spread, chewing through wool-blend rugs and moving on to the woollen jumpers in the wardrobe.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
a surface spray or steam clean only reaches the top of the pile and leaves the buried stages to hatch. We do not chase larvae around your home, we fully submerge the rug at our Yatala facility, flushing the eggs, larvae and the grime that drew the moths in straight out of the foundation and fringes, the exact places an in-home spray or steam clean cannot reach.
we are rug-only and have been for 29 years, so your rug is never steamed over like the lounge-room carpet. Our customers tell us the difference is that their rug was finally not treated like an ordinary carpet, washed by hand and fibre-correct, never an automated machine and never steam.
our IICRC-certified technicians inspect the rug and tell you plainly what they see and what can or cannot be saved, no fear marketing. Older moth-eaten spots may remain, but the rug comes back clean, fresh and safe to use, and you are quoted before we start.
the products we use are non-toxic and safe for cats and crawling children once the rug is home, your dyes are colour-fastness tested first, and the rug is dried under controlled conditions so nothing is left damp to hatch again. Every wash is fully insured and backed by a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.

Common questions
Can you get rid of moths in a rug?
Yes, in most cases. The catch is that the eggs and larvae live deep in the rug's foundation and fringes, not on the surface, so vacuuming and sprays miss them. We fully submerge the rug at our Yatala facility, and that immersion wash flushes the eggs, larvae and the grime that drew the moths in straight out. We inspect your rug first and tell you honestly what can be saved before any work begins.
What kills rug moths, and does vinegar kill the eggs?
Home remedies like vinegar, baking soda or mothballs may deter the odd adult moth, but they do not reliably kill the eggs and larvae buried in the pile, which is why the damage keeps returning. A full immersion hand-wash physically removes those hidden stages from the foundation. We can also apply an optional moth-deterrent that makes the fibres unappealing to larvae, so the rug stays protected once it is home.
Can moth larvae survive the washing machine or a steam clean?
Often, yes, which is the problem. A domestic washing machine or hot-water carpet extraction only reaches the surface, while eggs and larvae sit below in the foundation and fringes, and a machine can also leave a rug sour and damp. We are rug-only, so your rug is never thrown in a machine or steamed. Because we hand-wash by full immersion and then dry under controlled conditions, the hidden stages are flushed out and the musty, rolled-up smell goes with them.
Do carpet moths ever really go away, or will they come back?
They can return after any clean if eggs or adults survive elsewhere in the home, so we tackle it two ways. First, full immersion removes the eggs and larvae living in the rug itself. Second, an optional moth-deterrent treatment helps stop re-infestation, and we will point out any other soft furnishings nearby that may be harbouring them. We back our work with a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.
How do I moth-proof a rug, and what will treatment cost?
The reliable way to moth-proof a good wool or handmade rug is an annual professional wash that removes the dust and grime moths feed on, paired with an optional deterrent and gentle natural repellents like cedar at home. There is no fixed price because it depends on size, fibre and condition, so we quote before we start, no surprise bills. Standard turnaround is about 7 days, with 48-hour service on request.
