Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Why a Tweed Heads rug keeps coming back musty

It usually starts with the smell. You pull the lounge rug out to use it again, or the hallway runner comes out of storage, and the musty, rolled-up smell is too strong for the house. Or there is pet urine that is too strong for home cleaning, the kind that keeps coming back whenever the room warms up. Here on the border coast the salt air and humidity make all of it worse. You have blotted it, sprayed it, even hired a machine, and the smell still sits in the pile. The honest fix is to take the rug away, wash it right through and dry it properly.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

A surface steam only masks the smellAn on-site steam clean wipes the top of the pile and leaves the musty, sour smell sitting in the foundation. Within a week the coastal humidity draws it straight back up and you are back where you started.
Over-wetting on the floor shrinks and distortsA rug pushed full of water on your floor cannot rinse or dry evenly. Wool and natural fibres swell, shrink and pull out of shape, and once a handmade rug distorts there is no easy way back.
Colours run when dyes are not tested firstFlood a Persian, Turkish or wool rug with water and no colour-fastness test and the dyes bleed into each other. One red line creeping into a cream border can ruin a rug for good.
Coastal humidity sours a damp rugMoisture trapped deep in the pile cannot escape in Tweed humidity, so it stays damp for days. That is how a clean turns into a mildewy, sour smell instead of a fresh one, and why it goes straight back down wrong.

“They gave sensible advice about colour movement and old water marks. We sent the modern synthetic rug in after water came under a door. The smell is gone and the mark is far less obvious.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

We come to you, free, with no distance fee

Our vans run to Tweed Heads and Northern NSW on set days each week, so the heavy, bulky rug never has to fold into your car or cross the border. Pickup and delivery are genuinely free, with no surprise add-on for the distance, unlike a generic carpet van.

A full hand-wash, not a carpet machine

We only wash rugs and we never run carpet jobs. Your rug is hand-washed by full immersion at our dedicated Yatala facility, never steamed over on your floor, the right way to flush out the smell the coast keeps bringing back.

Odour and pet urine reached at the source

Immersion lets the wash reach the foundation and backing where urine and musty smell actually sit, not just the surface a hired machine or spray can touch. The rug comes home neutral, and the dog stops sniffing that corner.

Dye-tested, fibre-correct, dried right through

Before any water touches it we identify the fibres and test the dyes for colour-fastness, then wash by full immersion and dry under controlled airflow. That is how a wool, silk or Persian rug comes back fresh and the right shape, not shrunk or bled.

Pet smell finally gone for our woven rug
Our dog had one accident on the woven rug, but it was enough to make the whole room smell off. Premier treated it properly and the odour is gone. We are in Kearneys Spring, so having it collected made the job much easier. I liked that the advice was honest before the work started.

Good to know

Common questions

How much does it cost to clean a rug, and is it worth it?

Rugs vary so much by size, fibre and condition that a flat price would be guesswork, so we assess each rug and give you a straight quote before any work begins, with pickup and delivery genuinely free. Is it worth it? A proper immersion wash removes set-in pet urine and that musty, rolled-up smell a hired machine cannot reach, often the difference between using a good rug again and replacing it. If a rug is not worth cleaning, we will tell you honestly.

How much does it cost to wash an 8x10 rug?

Price comes down to the rug, not just the size. An 8x10 in sturdy synthetic costs less than the same size in hand-knotted wool or silk that needs careful dye-testing and gentle handling. Rather than quote a bargain figure sight unseen, we price each rug by its actual size, fibre and condition once we have seen it, and the quote is clear and itemised up front. Book more than one and you save $20 off every additional rug in the same pickup.

Is it worth it to get an area rug cleaned, or should I just hire a machine?

A hired machine or DIY steam cannot safely immersion-wash a wool, silk or Persian rug, and it cannot reach set-in pet urine sitting in the backing. It pushes water into the pile with nowhere to drain, which is what causes shrinkage and that damp, sour smell. A specialist off-site wash treats the rug as a rug with history, flushes it right through and dries it properly, which is exactly what DIY and a generic carpet van cannot do.

Will the musty or pet-urine smell actually come out, or just get covered up?

A surface steam only masks it because the smell lives in the foundation, which is why it returns when the room warms up. Full immersion flushes the affected fibres right through rather than wiping the top, so the rug comes home neutral. With deep-set old urine we give you an honest assessment at pickup of whether it may need more than one treatment, and the work is backed by a 7-day free re-wash plus your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Do you really cover Tweed Heads and Northern NSW, and is there a charge for the distance?

Yes, genuinely. We service South East Queensland and Northern NSW, and our vans run to the Tweed area and across Northern NSW on set days each week. Pickup and delivery are included with no distance fee and no hauling a heavy rug across the border yourself. It is collected from your door, tagged for chain of custody so your exact rug comes back, and returned to your door. Standard turnaround is about 7 days, with a 48-hour service on request.
