Why red wine on a rug rarely lifts with a pantry remedy
Red wine carries tannins and the same anthocyanin pigments that stain teeth and glasses. On wool, silk or hand-knotted fibres they sink past the surface and lock in fast, which is why the mark looks worse the next morning, and why a closed-up room starts to hold a faint sour smell that bothers you more each week. The harder problem is usually the rescue attempt. The instinct to scrub is the one that does the damage. As people tell us again and again, "I made it worse by rubbing it with a towel," which grinds the pigment deeper and fuzzes the pile. Salt, soda water, vinegar and the white-wine trick can push the colour further in or leave a pale ring, and the Napisan or OxiClean soak you reached for often will not fully shift it on a delicate rug.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
For 29 years we have washed rugs only, including wool, silk, antique, Persian, Turkish and viscose pieces. As our customers put it, your rug is "not treated like a normal carpet job," and never cleaned in a van out the front.
We identify the fibre and test colour-fastness before anything touches the rug, then tell you straight how far the mark can safely lift. A fair result you were warned about beats a promise we cannot keep, and that honesty is what most people thank us for.
We hand-wash by full immersion in controlled water at our dedicated Yatala facility, drawing wine from deep in the pile and rinsing the foundation rather than skimming the surface, which is exactly why it suits the delicate rugs a generic cleaner should not touch.
Non-toxic products that are pet and child safe, no harsh bleaching agents, controlled drying so nothing sours later, full insurance, and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee plus your Australian Consumer Law rights.
7 careful stages, all 15 steps
No shortcuts and no guessing. Your rug moves through the same specialist system every time, from your front door and safely back again.
Standard turnaround 7 days door to door, or 48-hour service on request.

Common questions
Does red wine leave a permanent stain on a rug, or can you actually get it out?
Red wine is one of the hardest spills, so we will be straight with you: it often lightens to where it no longer catches your eye rather than disappearing completely. How far it lifts depends on the fibre, the dye, how long it has been there and what has already been put on it. We inspect and dye-test first, then tell you honestly what to expect before we start. Call us on 1800 655 949 and describe the rug.
What removes old or dried red wine stains that home remedies could not?
An old or dried mark is harder than a fresh one, but it is rarely hopeless, even if vinegar, OxiClean, a branded spray or a previous clean did not fully shift it. Our immersion hand-wash reaches pigment that surface methods leave behind by flushing the whole foundation. The honest answer depends on the rug, so call us, tell us what you have tried, and we will give you a real read before you commit a cent.
Why are red wine stains so hard to remove?
Red wine carries tannins and anthocyanin pigments, the same compounds that stain teeth, and they bind to natural fibres fast and deep. On wool or silk they sink past the surface and lock in, so blotting only lifts what sits on top. Heat from hot water or a hairdryer bonds them permanently, which is why a dye-aware immersion wash, not a surface scrub, is what actually reaches them.
I made it worse rubbing it with a towel. Have I ruined it?
Probably not, and you are far from alone, because rubbing is the most common thing people do and the one that sets it deeper. The safest thing now is to stop, leave it dry, and apply nothing else. Blot only, never scrub, keep it cold not hot, and skip the white wine and peroxide. Then let an IICRC-certified rug specialist treat the pigment with a dye-aware process built for delicate fibres.
How do professionals remove red wine that DIY and a normal cleaner could not?
We do not blast steam over a delicate rug. We identify the fibre, test colour-fastness, then hand-wash the whole rug by full immersion in controlled water at our Yatala facility, drawing wine from deep in the pile and rinsing the foundation, then dry it under controlled conditions. It is dye-aware and gentle, which is why it suits silk, wool, Persian and Turkish rugs a generic cleaner or dry cleaner should not touch.
