From your front door to our Yatala facility and safely back again. This is the real process, not a quick spray.
An oriental rug is not a carpet, and it should never be cleaned like one
If your rug is sentimental, inherited or simply not something you want damaged, you already know the worry: it needs a proper clean, not the sort of thing a carpet cleaner can do. A hand-knotted oriental rug is natural fibre with plant dyes that are not always colourfast, so the hot steam and harsh chemistry meant for synthetic carpet can loosen the dyes, mat the wool and buckle the foundation. A rug pulled from storage also holds a deep, musty smell a surface freshen-up only covers for a fortnight. It deserves to be inspected, colour-tested and hand-washed right through.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
Your rug is gently hand-washed by full immersion in clean water, never an automated machine and never a hot steam blast. This is the traditional method a delicate oriental rug actually needs, done by hand the whole way through.
We tag and record your rug at pickup and wash it individually, never batch-soaked with strangers' rugs. The same rug you handed us is the one delivered back to your door, with a clear chain of custody the whole way.
29 years washing rugs only, at our dedicated Yatala facility, never in a van or your home. IICRC-certified technicians identify and dye-test your rug first, so it is never given the same treatment as a synthetic floor carpet.
We colour-test the dyes and give you a straight read on what will and will not lift before we start, with no scare tactics. Non-toxic, pet and child safe products throughout, and fully insured while your rug is with us.
7 careful stages, all 15 steps
No shortcuts and no guessing. Your rug moves through the same specialist system every time, from your front door and safely back again.
Standard turnaround 7 days door to door, or 48-hour service on request.

Common questions
How expensive is it to clean an oriental rug?
Every oriental rug is different, so we quote on size, fibre and condition rather than a one-size price that would be wrong for your rug. Tell us the rough dimensions and what you are dealing with on 1800 655 949 and we will give you a clear figure up front, with no surprises at delivery. Pickup and delivery are free, and you save $20 on each extra rug in the same booking.
Can I steam clean my oriental rug?
We would not, and neither would most rug specialists. Steam over-saturates natural fibres and can loosen the plant dyes, shrink the wool unevenly and leave damp conditions for mould. That is why so many people who call us were nervous about a carpet cleaner steaming their rug in the lounge room. A genuine oriental rug needs to be dye-tested and hand-washed right through, then dried in a controlled room, which is exactly what we do at Yatala.
Can you machine wash an oriental rug?
No. A washing machine or an automated wash rig is far too rough for hand-knotted wool and silk, pulling knots loose, fraying the fringe and felting the pile. We hand-wash every rug individually by full immersion in clean water, the traditional method that cleans deeply without the harm a machine causes to a delicate, often irreplaceable rug.
Can I clean an oriental rug myself?
You can gently vacuum and lift fresh spills, but a full wash at home is where good rugs get ruined. Without a dye-fastness test the colours can bleed, and household carpet products and uncontrolled water shrink and distort wool. For a deep clean it is safer to have it inspected and hand-washed properly. We are happy to talk you through caring for it between washes on 1800 655 949.
How often should you have your oriental rugs cleaned?
For a rug in a living area, a professional hand-wash every one to three years is a good guide, sooner with pets, children or heavy traffic. Inherited rugs that have not been washed in decades, or one carrying a musty, rolled-up smell, are worth doing now before dust grinds into the foundation. We will inspect yours and give you an honest view on timing, never push you into a wash it does not need.
