A carpet steam clean is not what your Oriental rug needs
When a rug is genuinely worth keeping, the Persian you inherited from your grandmother, a piece that has been rolled up in storage for years, or one carrying a musty smell after a humid spell, the real worry is handing it to someone who treats it like wall-to-wall carpet. As one owner put it, it needs a proper clean, not the sort of thing carpet cleaners can do. A van or in-home steam clean only wets the surface, so the stale smell and the dust packed into the foundation come straight back within a fortnight. What an Oriental rug actually needs is a specialist who identifies the fibre, tells you honestly what will lift, and washes it on its own terms.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.
Don't risk a one-size-fits-all clean on a rug you love

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
We do not run rugs through an automated wash line or steam them in a van. Every Oriental rug is hand-washed by full immersion at our dedicated Yatala facility, fibre-correct and gentle, the way a hand-knotted rug should be cleaned.
We test every rug for colour-fastness before any water touches it, hand-wash by full immersion in controlled water rather than a hot blast, then dry under controlled airflow, so the musty smell and deep grit are rinsed out of the foundation, not masked.
Your rug is tagged and recorded at pickup and stays tracked the whole time it is in our care. Fully insured throughout, so the same heirloom that left your door is the one returned to it, never batched or swapped.
We inspect first and give you a straight read on what old stains and water marks can realistically do before we start. If a rug is not worth cleaning, we tell you, so you decide with the facts, not a sales pitch.

Common questions
How expensive is it to clean an Oriental rug?
There is no flat price because every Oriental rug is different. Cost depends on size, fibre and condition, so we quote each one individually rather than guess online. Free pickup and delivery is included, and you get $20 off each additional rug in the same booking. At inspection we give you an honest assessment, including if a rug is not worth cleaning, so you decide before anything is washed. Phone 1800 655 949 for a quote.
Can I steam clean my Oriental rug?
We do not recommend it. Steam over-saturates the wool and can loosen the natural dyes in a handmade rug, causing colour to bleed and fibres to shrink unevenly, and leftover moisture invites mould. A hand-knotted Oriental rug should be dye-tested, then hand-washed by full immersion in controlled water and dried under control, which is exactly what we do at our Yatala facility. The result is a deep clean without the risk a hot steam blast carries.
Can you machine wash an Oriental rug?
No, a handmade Oriental rug should never go through a domestic washing machine or an automated wash line, both of which agitate and distort the foundation, fray the fringe and risk felting the wool. That is the whole reason we are a hand-wash specialist. Each rug is washed by hand, by people, with the construction and fibre respected at every step. Phone 1800 655 949 and we will collect it from your door.
Why does steam cleaning destroy an Oriental rug?
Steam forces hot water deep into fibres that were never meant for it. On a handcrafted rug that means dye bleeding, uneven shrinkage and distortion, and because the rug stays damp it can grow mould. A carpet wand also only wets the surface, so trapped grit and odour come straight back. We avoid all of that by dye-testing first, hand-washing by full immersion in controlled water, then drying under managed airflow.
How often should you have your Oriental rugs cleaned?
For most homes a professional hand wash every two to three years keeps a wool or hand-knotted rug healthy, sooner if you have pets, high traffic or have just pulled the rug out of storage. Regular vacuuming helps between washes, but it cannot shift the grit packed into the foundation, which is what wears the knots over time. When you book, we will give you an honest read on your rug and a sensible interval for it. Phone 1800 655 949.
