Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Jute is the fibre the internet tells you to give up on

Search how to clean jute and the verdict is brutal: "once it's soiled the only thing you can do is throw it out." And the horror stories back it up. Someone's cat pukes on the rug, mum tries white vinegar, and the stain just sits there. A heavy downpour soaks one end and weeks later the mould spots appear. Worst of all is the person who reached for an all-purpose cleaner that was "too effective" and lifted the colour straight out of the weave. Jute drinks water like a sponge and dries slowly, so every wrong move sets the damage deeper. The honest truth is jute can be cleaned beautifully, but only with moisture control, colour safety and proper drying. That's the difference between a specialist and a soak.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Musty, mouldy storage and flood smellJute soaked by rain, a flood or long storage dries slowly and breeds a damp, mouldy odour deep in the weave. A spray of deodoriser buys a fortnight, then the smell drifts back as the fibre dries out again.
Colour bleached out by harsh DIY cleanersThe most common jute disaster: an all-purpose or oxygen cleaner that's "too effective" and strips the colour straight out. Jute is uniquely prone to discolouration, and once the dye is gone there is no putting it back.
Pet urine and cat vomit set in deepVomit and urine soak past the surface into the woven core, and a quick vinegar or spray fix leaves both the mark and the smell behind. Without proper low-moisture and enzyme work, it only sets harder.
Browning and shrinking from over-wettingSoak jute too long and its natural plant oils wick up as brown watermarks while the rug shrinks and pulls out of shape. A home or carpet machine that spin-washes it can loosen the woven fibres for good, often harder to undo than the stain you started with.

“They collected it from Holland Park and were clear about the limits of natural fibres. The sisal rug needed care because jute and sisal do not forgive much. It came back cleaner and not stiff.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Rug-only hand-wash specialist, never a carpet job

We wash rugs, not carpets. We dye-test and identify your fibre first, then hand-wash jute the way jute demands, instead of steaming it on the floor or running it through gear set up for nylon broadloom, the thing generic carpet cleaners get wrong.

Controlled low moisture, no soak, no steam, no shrink

The pros are right that moisture loosens woven jute and breeds mildew. So we never soak, scrub or steam it. Our hand wash uses controlled water and gentle, colour-safe chemistry that lifts grit, odour and stains without over-wetting the fibre.

Dried properly, not just washed on top

Slow drying is what kills jute, so at our dedicated Yatala facility every rug is dried fully under monitoring, with controlled drying conditions. That's how we stop the browning, shrinking and mould that catch out DIY soaks and in-home jobs.

Honest verdict first, then guaranteed

We pre-inspect every rug and tell you plainly whether yours is worth cleaning or genuinely past saving before any money changes hands. The work is fully insured, with chain of custody tagged at pickup so your exact rug comes back, and a free re-wash guarantee if you're not happy.

Mould issue handled in Fernvale
The room felt stale because of the damp smell in the jute rug. I liked that they talked about drying as much as cleaning. We were comfortable putting it back down straight away. I was glad we did not have to replace it.

A fresh woven rug after the pet accident in Kearneys Spring
Our dog had one accident on the woven rug, but it was enough to make the whole room smell off. Premier treated it properly and the odour is gone. We are in Kearneys Spring, so having it collected made the job much easier. I liked that the advice was honest before the work started.

Musty smell gone in Jondaryan
Our large area rug had been against a damp wall and started smelling musty. They collected it from Jondaryan and explained the mould cleaning process clearly. A couple of faint marks remain, but the rug feels much healthier.

Puppy smell gone for our Chinese wool rug

Off-site clean helped in Nathan
After a few years in the main room, the Oriental rug needed a proper wash rather than another quick vacuum. The collection made sense because the rug was too bulky for my car. It came back dry, clean and ready to put straight down. That small change made the room feel cleaner overall.

Good help with old stains in St Lucia
The Moroccan rug had reached the point where spot cleaning was not enough. The old stains are much softer now, and the colours look cleaner in daylight. It was an easy result to be happy with. The St Lucia pickup was handled well.

Good to know

Common questions

Does water ruin a jute rug?

Water itself doesn't ruin jute, moisture left sitting in the fibre and dried slowly does. That's what causes browning, shrinking and the musty, mouldy smell, and it's why home washing machines and DIY soaks wreck jute. Our method is the opposite: a controlled, low-moisture hand wash where the rug is never left soaking, the colour is protected, then it's dried fully under monitoring rather than just washed on top. The risk isn't water touching jute, it's moisture left in it. We control both.

Can a jute rug be professionally cleaned?

Yes, despite the common belief that you just throw it out once it's soiled. The catch is that it must be done by a fibre specialist with the right low-moisture process and proper drying, not a home machine or a generic carpet clean. Whether your particular rug is worth it depends on its size, fibre and condition, which is why we pre-inspect it first and give you an honest verdict before you commit. If your jute is sound, cleaning beats binning a rug you actually like.

What is the best way to clean a jute rug?

For day-to-day care, vacuum with suction only and no beater bar, and blot fresh spills straight away, never rub. But for anything soaked in, smelly or stained, the safe answer is a professional low-moisture wash. The worst things you can do are soak it, scrub it, steam it or run it through a home or carpet machine, which is exactly where most ruined jute starts. We hand-wash it with controlled moisture and proper drying so the fibre comes back clean, not over-cleaned.

Can I put baking soda on a jute rug?

Baking soda can absorb a fresh, light odour if you sprinkle it on, leave it briefly and vacuum it off. But it grinds down into the open weave and does little for a set-in smell or stain, and a wet paste can leave its own mark. For a musty mould smell or a pet accident that's soaked in, baking soda just masks the problem. Those need proper low-moisture and enzyme treatment at the source, which is what our wash is built to do.

What is the lifespan of a jute rug?

A well-kept jute rug typically lasts several years in a low-traffic room, and noticeably less where there's heavy foot traffic, moisture or pets, a porch or entry rug taking shoe dirt wears fastest. The quickest way to shorten its life is leaving it damp or cleaning it harshly, which is precisely what our process avoids. A proper low-moisture wash that lifts grit, odour and stains without over-wetting actually helps the fibre last, rather than wearing it out the way a soak-and-scrub does.
