How can I clean a rug naturally without harsh chemicals?
At home you can vacuum both sides, spot-treat with diluted white vinegar, and air it in the sun, but that only reaches the surface. For wool, silk or handmade rugs the allergy-triggering dust sits deep in the foundation where natural home methods cannot reach. We dry-dust first, then fully submerge the rug in a controlled water bath using non-toxic products, and rinse them back out before drying. It is a genuinely natural wash that actually lifts the deep dust, not just the surface.
How do I clean a rug without washing it, or one that is not washable?
If a rug is too delicate, antique or fibre-sensitive for a home wash, do not soak it yourself, you risk shrinking, felting and dye bleed. Vacuum gently, beat or shake out loose dust outdoors, and blot spills rather than rubbing. When it needs a real clean, we dye-test for colourfastness first, then hand-wash by gentle immersion. That is far safer for wool, silk and Oriental rugs than any aggressive in-home heat or steam method.
Is a 20 year old rug unhealthy?
It can be. Over the years a rug builds up allergy-triggering dust, dust mites, dander and trapped grit deep in the pile that a vacuum or hire machine never removes, which is a real concern in homes with kids, pets or allergy sufferers.
