How to clean an old vintage rug?
Properly, and not at home. The rug is collected, inspected and dye-tested, then hand-washed by full immersion at our Yatala facility, so the wash reaches deep into the foundation rather than skimming the top of the pile. The wash is controlled to suit the fibre, and the rug is dried flat so it keeps its shape and the dyes stay put.
Can I put baking soda over an antique nice rug?
We would not on a genuine antique. Baking soda, vinegar and a hired steam machine only freshen the surface, and on an old hand-knotted rug they can set stains, dull the pile or disturb dyes that were never tested for colour-fastness. The musty smell sits deep in the wool where these tricks cannot reach. A controlled full immersion wash flushes it right through safely, which home methods simply cannot do.
How to bring an old rug back to life?
Decades of ground-in dust are what leave the pile flat and the colours tired, so a proper deep wash is usually what revives an old rug.
