Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Why an antique rug needs the opposite of ordinary carpet cleaning

Owners tell us the same thing: my rug needs a proper clean, not the sort of thing carpet cleaners can do. They are right. You have probably let a steam cleaner or a hire machine have a go and watched it only freshen the surface, not really get there. So the musty smell from years rolled up in storage and the urine soaked into the backing both creep straight back. Worse, an automated machine floods aged wool and silk with heat and water the fibres were never built to take. A hand-knotted heirloom is not carpet, and it should never be cleaned like one.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Fringes fray and unravelAn automated machine or aggressive brushing drags on tender cotton fringes until they fray, knot and tear. On a hand-knotted rug that edge is part of the foundation, and once it goes it does not grow back.
Old dyes bleed and runVegetable and mineral dyes in an antique can bleed the moment they meet uncontrolled hot water. Reds run into pale ground and fringes, and a permanent muddy halo is left behind that no second clean removes.
Over-wetting shrinks and felts the woolAged wool flooded and left wet too long will shrink, ripple and felt into a stiff, matted board. The rug never lies flat again, and the soft hand that made it special is gone for good.
Lost, swapped or damaged off-siteHand a heirloom to an operator with no tracking and it can come back the wrong rug, or not at all. With no record of what arrived, you have no way to prove the piece that went out is the piece that came home.

Don't risk a one-size-fits-all clean on a rug you love

“We found wool fibres coming loose while moving the antique rug. The worn areas are still there, but the rug feels cared for. I liked that it came back ready to put straight down.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Genuine hand-wash, never an automated machine

Your rug is washed by hand, fibre by fibre, in controlled-temperature water chosen for its age and dyes, never blasted by a machine on a one-size production line. That is the difference between a clean it survives and one it suffers.

Your exact rug back, tracked the whole way

Every rug is tagged at pickup and follows a clear chain of custody through our Yatala facility, so the piece you handed us is the piece we return. Fully insured from the moment it leaves your door.

Dye-tested and honestly assessed first

Before any water, we run a dye and colour-fastness test and tell you plainly what is realistic, including any old stains or worn areas that will not lift. You decide knowing the truth, not a sales promise.

Free door-to-door pickup, you lift nothing

We collect from your Northern NSW door and deliver back free, with vans visiting each area on set days, so a heavy antique never rides in your boot or strains your back.

Good to know

Common questions

Is it worth cleaning an old or antique rug, or am I better off replacing it?

For a hand-knotted or sentimental rug it is almost always worth it. A proper wash brings back colour, softness and freshness that a new machine-made rug simply cannot match. We inspect and dye-test your rug first and give you an honest view at pickup. If a piece is genuinely too fragile or worn to gain from cleaning, we tell you straight rather than taking your money, and we quote by size, fibre and condition so you see a clear price before we begin.

How do you clean an old vintage rug, and can I just use baking soda or vinegar at home?

Home tricks like baking soda or vinegar only freshen the surface, and acidic vinegar can shift fragile old dyes and set stains rather than lift them. We collect your rug, inspect it, run a dye and colour-fastness test, then hand-wash it by full immersion at our Yatala facility in controlled-temperature water and dry it flat. That genuine wash reaches the musty smell and deep grime an antique holds, without the hot blast an automated machine would put through aged fibres.

My antique rug smells musty after years in storage. Will the smell actually go and stay gone?

Yes. The stale, damp smell from years rolled up sits deep in the foundation, so a surface clean only hides it for a fortnight. Our full immersion hand-wash flushes the odour right through the rug rather than masking it, and our controlled drying means it does not creep back in the next humid spell. Every wash is backed by our 7-day free re-wash guarantee, so if anything is not right you tell us and we put it right.

A regular carpet cleaner could wreck it, so how do I know an automated machine will not ruin mine?

We never put antiques through an automated machine, and we never clean them in your home with truck-mounted steam. Each rug is hand-washed in controlled-temperature water set to suit its age, never a hot blast, after a dye and colour-fastness test, then dried flat to protect old vegetable and mineral dyes and aged wool and silk. We have specialised in rugs only for 29 years, our technicians are IICRC-certified, and your tagged rug is fully insured the whole time it is with us.

Do you really come to Northern NSW, and what does pickup and turnaround look like?

Yes. We service South East QLD and Northern NSW, with vans visiting each area on set days every week, and pickup and delivery to your door are free with no distance charge. Standard turnaround is about 7 days door to door, with a 48-hour service available on request. Booking more than one rug saves you $20 off every additional rug in the same booking.
