Common questions
How do you clean an old vintage rug?
We collect it, inspect and dye-test it, then gently hand-wash it by full immersion at our Yatala facility, never an automated machine or a hot steam blast. It is dried flat under controlled conditions so nothing shrinks or felts, then delivered back to your door. That is the only safe way to deep-clean a vintage rug without risking the fibres or foundation.
Can I put baking soda or vinegar over an antique rug?
We do not recommend it on anything antique. Baking soda, vinegar and supermarket sprays only sit on the surface, and on delicate natural fibres they can dull the wool, set a stain or react with old dyes. The musty smell you are chasing sits deep in the foundation where a home treatment cannot reach. Far safer to let us dye-test and hand-wash it properly than risk marking an irreplaceable piece.
Is it worth cleaning an old or antique rug?
In most cases yes, and far cheaper than replacing a quality hand-knotted piece. A full immersion hand wash lifts years of grit and stale odour a carpet clean leaves behind and brings the pile and colour back to life. But we will tell you honestly at inspection if a rug is too worn or fragile to be worth it, rather than take your money for a clean that will not help. You add a second rug and save $20 on every extra rug in the same booking.
My rug came out of storage smelling stale and musty. Can you get the smell out for good?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people call. A stale storage or musty smell sits deep in the foundation where a surface steam cannot reach, so it only masks it for a fortnight. Full immersion hand washing flushes it right through, so the rug comes back smelling neutral and ready to put straight back down, not freshened for a week.

It stays at our Yatala facility the whole time, tagged and inspected at pickup under a clear chain of custody, so it is always accounted for and comes back as the same rug.
