From your front door to our Yatala facility and safely back again. This is the real process, not a quick spray.
Why an Afghan rug needs a specialist, not a carpet cleaner
You did not want it treated like a carpet. Maybe a general cleaner offered to 'just steam it while we're here', and something told you not to risk a rug that has been in the family for years. You were right to pause. People tell us the same thing again and again: their loungeroom rug needed a proper clean, not the sort of thing carpet cleaners can do. They let a steam machine have a go and it only freshened the rug, while the deep dust and that stale storage smell stayed locked in the foundation and came back within a fortnight. A hand-knotted rug like yours needs to be taken away, dye-tested, washed individually by hand and dried properly, which is exactly the service we built.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
Your rug is washed on its own by full hand immersion at our dedicated Yatala facility, never tumbled through an automated carpet machine or batched in with other people's rugs. It is tagged at pickup with full chain of custody, so the exact rug you sent is the one that comes home.
We dye-test for colour-fastness first, then wash by hand with the water temperature and chemistry matched to your fibre, never a fixed hot blast that can shrink the wool or run the dyes. The deep dust and stale storage smell are flushed out at the source, then the rug is dried under controlled conditions so it returns fully dry, not damp or musty.
We clean rugs and only rugs, so your Afghan is handled by IICRC-certified technicians who have spent nearly three decades on hand-knotted, vegetable-dyed wool. We inspect the rug and tell you honestly what the clean will and will not achieve before any water touches it, rather than over-promising to win the booking.
We collect and return across the Sunshine Coast at no charge, carry full insurance and back the work with a free re-wash guarantee on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights. Non-toxic, pet and child safe throughout, and if a loose fringe or binding is catching we will talk you through tidying it while your rug is with us.

Common questions
How do I clean my Afghan rug myself?
We understand the instinct, but home shampoo, supermarket spot cleaners and steam machines are where most damage to handmade rugs happens. They push water and grit deeper instead of flushing them out, and harsh chemicals can strip the wool or set the natural vegetable dyes running. There is no safe way to fully wash and properly dry a hand-knotted rug on your floor. Vacuum gently, blot fresh spills, and leave the actual wash to full hand immersion at our facility.
How do you wash a vintage or old Afghan rug?
Carefully and by hand. We dye-test the colours and inspect the foundation before any water touches the pile, then wash by full immersion with the water temperature matched to the fibre rather than a fixed hot blast. Older rugs with decades of storage dust respond well to this because it lifts grit out of the foundation rather than grinding it in. We dry under controlled conditions so a fragile vintage rug is never over-wet, shrunk or returned damp.
Should you steam clean an Afghan or Persian rug?
No, and this is the difference owners tell us matters most. A truck-mount or steam clean is built for wall-to-wall synthetic carpet, so on hand-knotted wool it only freshens the surface while the deep dust and odour stay locked in and come back. The wrong heat can also run the dyes and felt the wool. A handmade rug needs full hand immersion with the water matched to the fibre and proper drying, which a van-based steam clean cannot give it.
Do Afghan and Persian rugs need special cleaning?
Yes. They are hand-knotted from wool dyed with natural vegetable dyes, so the chemistry, water temperature and drying all have to suit the fibre rather than a synthetic carpet. That is why we wash each rug individually by hand at our Yatala facility, dye-test first, use non-toxic pet and child safe products, and dry under controlled conditions. A general carpet crew treating everything the same is exactly what risks the wool and the colours.
How much does it cost to have an Afghan rug cleaned, and is it worth it?
We quote by size, fibre and condition rather than a flat price, because a small wool rug and a large heirloom are very different jobs. The fair thing is to assess your rug and give you a real number before you commit, and if we ever think it is not worth cleaning we will tell you honestly. For a hand-knotted Afghan it is almost always worth it, because the wool lasts generations and a specialist wash restores it. Bring more than one rug and you save $20 on each additional rug.
