From your front door to our Yatala facility and safely back again. This is the real process, not a quick spray.
You do not want it treated like a carpet, and that is exactly what most cleaners do
If your Afghan rug has come out of storage, been inherited, or just had the dog have an accident on it, you already know the fear: hand it to the wrong cleaner and it comes back faded, felted or smelling worse. This needs a proper rug clean, not the sort of quick steam a carpet cleaner does, where the wand only freshens the top and the musty smell drifts back in a fortnight. A truck-mount process and harsh detergent are built for synthetic broadloom, not hand-knotted wool and natural dyes. What you actually want is someone who inspects it first, washes it right through by hand, and tells you honestly what is realistic before any water touches it.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
Every rug is washed on its own by full hand immersion at our dedicated Yatala facility, never with a truck-mount wand, never in a van, and never tumbled through a shared machine, so it comes back refreshed, not over-cleaned.
We tag your rug at pickup and hold a clear chain of custody from your home to Yatala and back, so the rug we return is the rug we collected, never swapped or lost in a batch.
We colour-fastness test every handmade rug before any water touches it, then hand-wash it gently to suit the fibre, never a hot blast, using non-toxic, pet and child safe products that protect the vegetable dyes and natural lanolin.
We inspect and tell you plainly what a clean can and cannot do, then dry the rug flat and fully so it comes home neutral and ready to lay, not with that damp, musty return.
7 careful stages, all 15 steps
No shortcuts and no guessing. Your rug moves through the same specialist system every time, from your front door and safely back again.
Standard turnaround 7 days door to door, or 48-hour service on request.

Common questions
How do I clean my Afghan rug at home?
Vacuum gently and blot fresh spills, but the safest answer is not to wet-wash it yourself. DIY shampoo, steam machines and supermarket cleaners use heat and harsh chemistry that can fade the vegetable dyes and rough up the wool on a handmade rug. A full wash also has to reach the foundation and then dry properly, which is hard to do at home without leaving a musty smell. That deep wash and controlled drying is the part we handle at our Yatala facility.
How do you wash a vintage or inherited Afghan rug safely?
Carefully and individually. We inspect the rug and run a colour-fastness test before any water touches it, then hand-wash it by full immersion gently to suit the fibre, never a hot blast. The pile is cleaned right through, then dried flat and fully so the foundation cannot shrink or buckle. A rug that has not been washed in decades is exactly the kind of job this process is built for.
Should you steam clean an Afghan or Persian rug?
No. A truck-mount steam wand is built for synthetic broadloom and only skims the surface of hand-knotted wool, so storage dust and pet odour stay deep in the pile and the smell drifts back. The heat can also fade the dyes. We use full hand immersion instead, then dry the rug flat and fully, so it is genuinely clean through to the foundation rather than just freshened on top.
The rug has pet urine in it. Will the smell really go, or just get masked?
Pet urine soaks down to the foundation, so a surface spray only hides it until the rug dries and then it comes back, and the corner keeps drawing the dog back. Our full immersion wash flushes the odour out of the wool and backing at the source, using non-toxic, pet and child safe products, rather than perfuming over the top, so the rug comes home smelling neutral rather than masked.
How do I know you will not ruin it or swap it?
Your rug is tagged at pickup and kept under a clear chain of custody, so the exact rug we collect is the one we return, never lost in a shared batch. It is inspected and colour-tested, then hand-washed on its own at Yatala, never in a van or automated machine. We have washed rugs, not carpets, for 29 years, are IICRC-certified, fully insured, and rated 4.9 from 8,550 reviews. You also get a 7-day free re-wash if you are not happy.
